Arundel & beyond

A great time was had by all at the Arundel Festival. Paintings, ceramics and sculpture were on display in the intriguing houses around this special little town. The home owners know full well that the majority of visitors are just as interested in their house as they are in the exhibits but that’s all part of the fun.

Painters of all styles were showing work. My particular favourites being Min Maude & Andy Waite who share a similar freedom in their application of the paint and nature in their themes.

I was based in the ”small but perfectly formed” St George’s Cottage, a 3 bedroom holiday home on School Lane. It proved to be a great location. The cottage looked wonderful and really set off the seaside theme to my work plus the aquatic colours. I stopped counting after 400 visitors and almost sold out of stock!

So, that brings me to life post-Arundel….   I’m embarking on a series of landscapes based on the scenery of North Yorkshire. Back in June I completed a 26 mile, 3 Peak walk with a group of friends. The scenery was incredible, the effort enormous and the whole event uplifting. We shared tears, smiles, laughter, lucozade and plasters in equal measure! I want my paintings to reflect the wildness of the scenery, the gruelling nature of the experience and the beauty of that landscape. I’m aiming for a very loose style, almost abstracted perhaps deferring to the style of Andy Waite mentioned above.

I’m also looking forward to getting back to my life drawing classes and to a couple of courses that I have booked with Emily Ball at the Seawhite studios in Partridge Green. I’ll let you know how they go and what I learn from them.

Affordable Art Fair 2011

I went to the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea this month and had an uplifting browse round the stands. The art work on display was of a genuinely high standard and varied enough to retain the visitor’s interest. I was excited about the number of people leaving the art fair with AAF carrier bags and exciting looking brown paper parcels, in particular the Audi Convertible with a HUGE canvas sticking out of the open top! The fair clearly meets a demand from the general public despite prices being above what a great number of us would consider “affordable”, being mostly £2.5k – £3.5k. The stands were entirely run by galleries not by individuals so perhaps that is what Art by Lucy Ames should do next, seek representation by a gallery? What do you think?

Christmas sale, in the snow!

Well, I’m booked up to do a festive sale this coming weekend, “Christmas at Horsham Park Barn” (cue Bing Crosby & sleigh bells). It sounds lovely and won’t it be idyllic if it snows? The Barn is a beautiful venue, next to the Bandstand in Horsham Park and adjacent to the wonderful Conservatory Cafe… so all tastes catered for. I will be exhibiting childrens canvasses featuring boats, pirates, princesses, elephants and monkeys. I will be joined by other artists with prints and cards, jewellery and sculpture. Perfect Christmas gifts and stocking fillers. Hope to see you there!

How do we classify “art”?

How do we know when a badly produced and overly short film can be called “art” instead of a poor film? How do we know when a pile of books in a box is “art” instead of just a pile of books in a box? I’ve recently been to the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy and it’s left me with a lot of questions about what we consider to be art, as well as a small smattering of inspiration. Is Tracy Emin a genius at art or at self-promotion and clever marketing?

Entering the corporate world

I’ve been asked to provide paintings to decorate the new offices of Spofforths in Horsham, an accountancy firm whose previous offices were destroyed in a fire. What an honour! I hope their receptionist likes them as she will have the best view of them in and around her reception area.
